Sophisticated and clearly out of the line, the Barbie Series of Cécile Plaisance take us back to childhood. Cécile Plaisance linked « Barbie » to the woman of today, playing with her femininity and taking on many lives at once... beauty icon in magazines, juggling with the real life « Ken » while remaining an accomplished housewife, flirting in her convertible, cheeky at the beach, ecstatically happy for « Spring break », executive woman at the office, autonomous, ageless and in the end…terribly alone.

A little bit of humor for the men in our lives, who want a woman to be a mother, a sister, a friend and a lover while staying sexy and assuming everyday responsibilities… Over and above the myth of a woman being an object, Cécile Plaisance strips the idol of our childhoods, supporting the challenges of woman today to defend their rights, their desires and maintain their gained freedom.

She transforms the newspaper being read by the woman in a hurry, not yet adequately dressed, the little black dress worn by the reserved, timid woman, the nuns cloak, the burka of the veiled woman… careful, behind one woman there may be another one hiding! Over and above the differences in cultures, clothes, the paths we take, women aspire to live fully and intensely their multi-faceted lives.

Cécile Plaisance uses a technique of lenticular developing, super imposing images, Barbie appears to undress in function of our position in front of the photo.

OLGA SERIES

I started to shoot real models, after having spent my life with Barbies for 5 years, to have a human contact in my work. Barbies are very wise girls but they don’t speak much. They don’t converse a lot.

The second reason is because I love femininity. I want my pictures to be a Hymn to femininity. Moreover, despite the feminist point a view, Iike with my Barbies, beautiful woman can also deliver strong messages. Charismatic Models and Women are able to say things, to show points of view, more convincingly than others. And this is my job, as a photographer, to highlight those messages through their appearance.

Above all I want women to take back their Liberty, wherever they live around the world and whatever religion they have. In 2017 no woman should be afraid of going out alone, of driving a car, of listening to music or have a drink in a bar with some friends. No women should be afraid of wearing a mini skirt in the street…No women should hide in a house waiting for her husband to return.

“There is no religion that can justify flouting women’s rights. Women should be equal to men and should be free to do whatever they want with their image and their bodies.”

Lastly, I try to show that life can be enchanting if you know how to have fun … I hope that people get a sense of how much fun I’m having myself …

Life is miraculous, and we have to have a sense of humour, whatever happens.
